When your mother needs more help, your bill does not change. Most of this industry does not work that way.
Why the Advertised Price Is Rarely the Price
When you call around, you will be quoted a monthly rate. That number is usually base rent, meaning the room and the meals.
Care is priced separately, and it is typically tiered. A resident is assessed, assigned a care level, and charged accordingly. Some communities add line items on top of that: medication management, incontinence supplies and support, 2-person transfers, escorts to meals.
None of this is hidden, exactly. It is in the agreement. But it is not in the number you were quoted on the phone, and families routinely budget against the wrong figure.
The part that catches people. Dementia progresses. The care level that applied when she moved in will not be the care level a year later. So the bill goes up at the same time the family’s stress, time, and savings are going down. We have watched families get reassessed into a higher tier during the worst month they had.
What Our Rate Covers
One monthly rate. All of the following, no matter how much help a resident comes to need:
Personal care
- Bathing, dressing, and grooming
- Mobility and transfer assistance
- Continence support
- Dementia-specific supervision
Health support
- Medication assistance, electronically recorded
- Registered nurse oversight
- Coordination with her own physicians
- 24-hour awake staffing, 2 caregivers overnight
Daily living
- 3 chef-prepared meals a day, plus snacks
- Special and modified diets
- Housekeeping
- Personal laundry and linens
Life in the house
- Activities and social programming
- Use of the library, salon, porches, and garden
- Transportation to appointments
- Utilities, WiFi, and maintenance
Compare Honestly
We are not the cheapest option in Sandoval County and we will not pretend otherwise. What we ask is that you compare the whole number, not the headline number.
When you tour anywhere, here or elsewhere, ask these:
- Is this base rent, or does it include care?
- How many care levels are there, and what does each one cost?
- Is medication management included or billed separately?
- What is charged separately for incontinence care?
- What triggers a reassessment, and how much notice do I get before the rate changes?
- What is the community fee, and is any of it refundable?
- How much has your rate increased in each of the last 3 years?
- How many caregivers are on the floor during the day, and how many are awake overnight? Will you put it in writing?

How Families Pay
Bosque Haven is a private-pay residence. Families commonly combine:
- Retirement income, savings, and investments
- Proceeds from selling a home
- Long-term care insurance
- VA Aid and Attendance, for eligible veterans and surviving spouses
- Family contributions, often split among siblings
If Medicaid is your path, we are not the right home, and we would rather say so now than after you have toured. Several communities in Sandoval County participate in Medicaid programs, and we will gladly point you toward them.
